The Dispute opens with a question to be elucidated: which of the man or the woman was guilty of the first infidelity. For this purpose, four young people – two boys and two girls – were brought up separately, without contact with the outside world in the middle of nature. With this comedy, both serious and cheerful, Marivaux imagines a sensual "paradise", populated by wonderfully uninhibited female figures. A rarity that delights.
