Just a stone’s throw from our beloved Pays de Gex – Monts Jura lies a rare gem of nature, the Pertes de la Valserine, a unique site in the region. Come and discover the passage left by the Valserine over time in the small town of Valserhône.
Looking for a change of scenery and a breath of fresh air? Then I’ve got the perfect place for you: the Pertes de la Valserine! A hidden natural treasure, just outside the town that proudly bears the name of its river, Bellegarde-sur-Valserine.
Meet at the car park in rue Louis Dumont, just below the railway viaduct. Don’t forget to bring a picnic – it would be a shame to miss out on a chance to eat in such a magnificent setting! So, are you ready? Yes ? Then let’s get started!
A relaxing setting
In just a few metres, you’ll find yourself immersed in a unique natural landscape. Walk down to the banks and enjoy the magnificent forest and relaxing scenery.
As you explore the Pertes de la Valserine, you’ll discover magnificent waterfalls and a forest covered in moss, even on the trees!
Stroll along a large footbridge literally above the banks of the Valserine, and if you look carefully, you can observe the wildlife in their natural habitat.
The power of water
A path will take you straight to the many gorges carved out by the passage of the Valserine and its many pools of water. Who knows, you might be lucky enough to spot a frog or two splashing about in their little pond!
These crevasses can be more than 30m deep – impressive, isn’t it? Would you dare to look down as you cross the various bridges? I certainly would!
During your walk you can see the Métral site and its old dam. This used to be a busy industrial area. Take a break at the edge of the river to take a dip, weather permitting! The water is calm and cool, perfect for relaxing after all that walking!
Did you know that Bellegarde was one of the first towns in France to be electrified?
Still up for another walk? Then I’d encourage you to take the Voie du Tram, a short, gently sloping path that you can access from a junction with the Pertes de la Valserine.
