Preparing for your tour
Before embarking on this adventure, it’s essential to get organised. A touring trek in the Jura, especially one lasting several days, cannot be improvised. Here’s some advice on how to prepare for your trek and avoid unpleasant surprises.
Focus on safety
Safety is paramount. Make sure you check the weather forecast before you set off, and take an IGN map and compass with you to avoid getting lost. You can obtain your map from one of the Pays de Gex – Monts Jura Tourist Office information offices. Respect the regulations in force, particularly in the Haute Chaîne du Jura National Nature Reserve, and remain vigilant throughout your route.
Plan your accommodation and meals
For a multi-day tour, plan where you will spend the night and how you will eat. You can choose between bivouacking (beware of nature reserve regulations) or reserving a mountain refuge. When it comes to food, opt for simple, light meals, such as dried products, seeds or pancakes. Don’t forget your stove, and opt for food that’s easy to transport.
The right equipment
Good equipment is the key to a successful tour. Pack a suitable rucksack (around 10 kilos) and don’t forget the essentials:
- Technical clothing for cold weather ;
- Sleeping bag or ground mattress ;
- Sunglasses ;
- Food and water ;
- Headlamp ;
- Walking poles ;
- Complete first-aid kit.
Water management
Water is essential. Find out about water supplies along your route and take purification tablets with you in case you don’t have access to drinking water.
Now you’re ready for adventure and to explore the Monts Jura. Whether it’s the scenery, the people you meet or the beauty of the place, every moment is an invitation to discover.
Get up high and let yourself be amazed!
