Among them, we find a wooded, quiet place, accessible to all. Do you recognise it? It’s the Cessy pond.
A little history before you go fishing…
Located in the commune of Cessy, this private pond was created in 1985 in place of a marsh. Then, in 1991, stocking began, mainly with white fish (roach, carp, tench) and carnivorous fish (pike). It wasn’t until 1995 that the local authority gave permission for fishing and the APEC association (Amicale des Pêcheurs de l’Etang de Cessy) was set up to manage the lake. In 2007, the lake was given the status of a tourist fishpond.

Are we going fishing ?
With your picnic in the bag, head for the Pays de Gex tourist office and, more specifically, the Gex tourist information office to get your hands on the holy grail: the fishing permit that will allow you to fish in the pond! Now you’re ready to go fishing!
There are a number of different fishing techniques to choose from: you’ll need dexterity to hit the target, or you’ll need grace and elegance to fly fish! The choice is yours! But remember that the choice of fly varies according to the location, the light… so that you have a fly that is best suited to the situation. Once you’ve hooked the fly on the line, cast it lightly and delicately.
Once you’ve got the right tackle, all that’s left to do is prepare the hooks and bait. It may not be to everyone’s liking, but you have to go through this stage if you want to tease the fish, as they say.

After a bit of a wait, the line pulls…. a plug! Yeah! Excited, we asked ourselves a number of questions: what species is it, how big is it and how much does it weigh? The species you’ll find in the pond include pike, carp and perch.
Other inhabitants include mallards, coots, dragonflies, damselflies, etc. Thanks to its diverse flora, including yellow irises, water lilies, reeds, black alder and willows, this site is exceptionally cool. The sunny spring and autumn days give the site a beauty that would thrill painters and photographers alike.
After respecting our charter of good fishing, we leave proud of our success with the desire to try again.
Did you get the pun? 😉
The good fisherman’s charter :
- I respect my environment (flora and fauna) and private property.
- I take care of the fish I catch.
- I apply the regulations (dates, times, quotas, measures, etc.) and have my fishing permit.
- I remain courteous with other anglers, users and fishery wardens.
- I share my skills and knowledge.
The Etang de Cessy is also an ideal place to go for a stroll, do some exercise on the fitness trail, enjoy the pétanque court and barbecue areas for successful picnics. There’s something for everyone! The Etang de Cessy is full of simple pleasures to be shared or enjoyed on your own!

Before we go, how about sharing a little anecdote about the place we love so much?
Did you know that boulders can be found at the pond?
During the erosion of mountain ranges, masses of rock collapse from glaciers. As these rocks retreat, some of them disappear and mix with sediments to form soils. The larger elements are called erratic boulders and may lie underground or remain visible at the surface. The boulders at Cessy are the result of the retreat of the Rhône glacier around 15,000 years ago.
Now you’re ready to discover the Cessy pond! We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. We already know that the time will fly by, lots of photos will be taken, laughter will be heard and the start will be difficult.
We look forward to seeing you there!
