Theatre: 1905: birth certificate
The Saturday 29 November at 20 a.m30
Théâtre de la Comédie 33 Grand'Rue 01210 Ferney-Voltaire
1905: Birth Certificate is a play by the ACTIF theatre company, as part of the Rencontres de la laïcité (Secularism Meetings) and the cultural season in Voltaire's homeland.
In 1905, France had been passionate about one subject for many years: the omnipresence of the Catholic Church in the running of the country.
Conservatives and progressives, reactionaries and revolutionaries in the National Assembly are at loggerheads. It is voting day: for or against separation, for or against secularism.
120 years later, a theatre company was commissioned to stage the debates of this day that would change the face of the country and its fundamental principles.
Combining texts from the period with the burlesque creations of a mismatched team, the play, set within a setting, brings to life the atmosphere of the day that shook the social balance of France, and the actors find themselves immersed in the heart of the question: what is secularism?
The ‘spectactors’ become members of the assembly, forming a chamber on the scale of the one at the time, and participating in the reconstruction of this historic day.
By the ACTIF company (Arc en Ciel Théâtre Île-de-France)
Directed by: Dorothée Defontaine
Cast: René Rabache, Michèle Bassereau, Dorothée Defontaine, Nordine Salhi, Bruno Subrini, Yan Tassin
