In a village in southern Italy, Maria, the victim of an assault, grabs a gun and walks toward her attacker. Followed by the entire village, she presses on, determined, despite attempts to stop her.
Sergio Leone
In this village in southern Italy, everyone has a nickname. Simeone, the brother of young Maria, is called Jesus. He resembles Christ, whom he portrays in the Good Friday Passion play.
Maria is the young girl who grabs the 9mm Smith & Wesson pistol from the kitchen sideboard. She leaves the house, gun in hand. She walks toward the village. She heads to Angelo the Idiot’s house—the young man who assaulted her the day before. The village follows in her wake, eventually forming a motley procession: the president of the hunting club, the employees of the junkyard, the mechanic, the local bikers, the old schoolteacher, and the neighbors who envy Maria’s youth—and her beauty. Everyone shares their own story about Maria, taking turns revealing different aspects of her life. Some encourage her, others try to dissuade her, but nothing and no one can stop her or make her drop her gun—not even her family, not even the police.
A modern Western directed by Georges Lini (Iphigénie à Splott).
