The Last Day of Fasting is a southern tragi-comedy where women's destinies collide in their struggle to emancipate themselves from tradition and the diktat of men.
We’re in the home of Theos, the patriarch, surrounded by his wife, Nouritsa the goddess-mother, his two daughters who are at odds with each other, his young son and his mad, erudite aunt. Not to mention the neighbors, who don’t intend to be ignored.
It’s the end of a fast for virgin girls. If they keep the fast to the end, they’ll see their future husbands appear to them in their dreams.
While Le dernier jour du jeûne is a thrilling love story, it’s also a detective story, as a terrible secret about the butcher’s daughter hangs over the neighborhood. In this play, a true saga and political slammer, the actors take on their characters with brio, using language that is both raw and poetic.
In this tragi-comedy, the second part of a trilogy, playwright, actor and director Simon Abkarian celebrates his Mediterranean roots and pays tribute to ancient Greece. The play won three Molières awards in 2020.
