The Friday 03 October at 20 a.m30
Comédie de Ferney 33 Grand’rue Comédie de Ferney 01210 Ferney-Voltaire
This is the first time that Albert Camus' The Myth of Sisyphus has been adapted for the theatre. In our adaptation, every thought, every sentence, every word is taken from the original work.
The Myth of Sisyphus Based on Albert Camus
Compagnie Pierre Martot
Adaptation and performance: Pierre Martot
Artistic collaboration: Jean-Claude Fall
A Compagnie Pierre Martot – Théâtre de Sisyphe production.
Created in 2023 in co-production with Lavoir Moderne Parisien and hosted in residence at Le Moulin d’Andé (27).
The gods condemned Sisyphus to roll a rock endlessly to the top of a mountain, from where it would fall back down under its own weight.
It is clear that Sisyphus represents humankind. And the rock is his destiny.
Based on this myth from ancient Greece, Albert Camus invites us to reflect on the absurdity of the human condition.
Reluctant to accept a way of thinking that is too far removed from experience, he proposes a “sensitive philosophy” – his own expression – in which reflection is based on lived experience.
For Albert Camus, there inevitably comes a moment when thought leads to action: “but that is only a way of thinking; now it is a matter of living”. Next, we will explore with him three figures that will help to flesh out our reflection: the actor, the committed man and the artist – specifically, the writer.
At the end of his quest, the work proposes what might be called a morality of quantity: “If I convince myself that this life has no other side than that of the absurd, if I feel that its entire balance depends on this perpetual opposition between my revolt and the darkness in which she struggles, if I accept that my freedom only has meaning in relation to a destiny limited in time by death, then I must say that what matters is not to live the best life, but to live the longest. It is this train of thought, which leads from a sense of the absurdity of the human condition to a passion for existence, that we wanted to convey.
