At 47, Carine Bielen lives alone with her son. In an intimate and powerful monologue, she examines how society views disability, difference, and the norm. With a mix of humor and vulnerability, she also explores the desire to “start a family.”
At 47, Carine Bielen lives alone with her son, Logan. Ever since she was a little girl, she has been stigmatized by a society that labels her “retarded” and “disabled.”
For an hour, through an intimate and powerful monologue, she sets aside her bleak daily life. She breaks through the barriers and tries to respond to a system that wants to box her in and control her, at the risk of breaking her.
Like an unfiltered clown, Carine Bielen bares her soul and wrings a laugh from her miserable circumstances. Almost in spite of herself, she holds up a mirror to people and society. How do we view difference, especially when the desire to “start a family” comes into play? To what extent can we put the norm into perspective, question it, or even reinvent it?
Portraying this unfiltered heroine is actress Cécile Bournay, whose performance blends precision and virtuosity, tragedy and comedy, capturing the character’s vitality while revealing her all-too-human vulnerability.
