Baroque Magic Exhibition

This exhibition highlights the figure of the Baroque sorceress and her enchantments through a spectacular journey!

Capable of imprisoning knights in their gardens of illusion, transforming men or even causing lightning to strike, sorceresses such as Circe, Alcina and Armide were major figures in Baroque culture.

Literary classics of the period, such as Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso (1532) and Tasso’s Jerusalem Delivered (1581), highlight the mysterious role they played in ballets and court performances.

Bring the whole family to discover these women who, in operas and court plays, were often the doubles of the set designer. The latter used prodigious machinery and stage effects to bring magic to life on stage: transformation, disappearance, lighting effects…

Between the lines, it is a presentation of the world of entertainment, its ingenious mechanisms and its lighting as envisaged in the Baroque period that is revealed to us.

From scene to scene, magic, metamorphoses, enchantments and other enchanting settings will transport you to a world where the boundaries of magic merge with theatre sets and the various rooms of the castle.
