Show: Three tales and a few
The Tuesday 26 May
Théâtre et Cinéma Le Bordeau 18 rue de Genève 01630 Saint-Genis-Pouilly
Is storytelling a perpetual exercise in ‘modernity’? For if it is passed on by word of mouth and from screen to screen, it is constantly being adapted, reinvented and reinterpreted to resonate with its era.
A resolutely contemporary author, Emmanuel Adely has rewritten Charles Perrault's fairy tales, restoring the mischievous youthfulness that is their due.
Thus, ‘Peau d’huile’ (The Skin of a Goose), ‘Lou’ and ‘Serial Lover’ remind us of stories that were skilfully sugar-coated by Walt Disney and are now being reimagined in their brutal reality by the emergence of #MeToo. Little Red Riding Hood and Bluebeard are back among our contemporaries, raising the eternally repressed questions of violence, incest, domination and ancestral fears.
Once upon a time, but only once or several times or all the time, it repeats itself, all the time it repeats itself. Thus the prologue to Trois contes et quelques sets the scene for our tales to come, as the repetition of our human failings continues.
This rewriting by Emmanuel Adely is, for the Merci group, the subject of a tragicomic moment performed by two strange actor-storytellers in an equally strange installation. It is above all the pleasure of playing with incisive, sonorous, ironically political language, as well as the joy of sharing this cruel and mischievous moment.
The Merci group would like to warmly thank Charles Perrault for making the exceptional journey from his century to attend the performances of his beloved tales, some four centuries after writing them. Will he recognise them?
